Fan art of the Vilafranca Dragon from the Fiesta Mayor.
The goal was to take the Dragon from the Fiesta Mayor and depict it as a real wyvern chasing its prey.
It is part of the popular Catalan Bestiary.
Its first documentation dates back to 1600, but studies indicate that it could be from the 13th or 14th century.
It is one of the oldest dragons in Catalonia. Its first appearances were in civil and religious festivities.
Nowadays, it always appears leading the Fiesta Mayor. Its dance consists of circling around itself, with its head lowered and its tail raised.
The flabiol and tamborí are usually played, and sometimes a gralla is used. It has firecrackers in its mouth, the tips of its wings, and at the end of its tail.
In 2006, a replica was created to prevent the original from deteriorating and to reduce its weight.
The original piece weighs 115.83 kg, while the replica weighs 80 kg.
Therefore, the original only appears on August 30th, the day of Sant Félix, while the replica is used on the 29th and 31st.
