The Smilodon had a smaller brain than modern felines but a much better sense of smell.
It was also slower but had much greater strength. Because of these characteristics, it has more resemblance to the clouded leopard and the red lynx.
Its fangs, which were fragile, took eighteen months to grow, and it is likely that they were used to suffocate and sever the prey’s artery while holding it with their body.
The longer the fangs, the less force their bite had, which was already weaker than that of a modern feline.
